Mecopen contains mecobalamin, which is a vitamin B 12 containing coenzyme with an active methyl base. It is the one and only homologue of vit-B 12 , found in the brain that participates in transmethylation as a vitamin B-12 containing coenzyme. It helps to restore normal levels of DNA and RNAs in the nerve cells by enhancing protein synthesis and stimulating methionine synthesis from homocysteine. Thus Mecopen helps to repair damaged nerve tissues in nerve disorder like axonal degeneration and demyelination. It also enhances the formation of lecithin (another major component of the myelin sheath).

Mecopen is indicated for 

• Peripheral neuropathies
• Diabetic neuropathies
• Drug induced neuropathy
• Alzheimer's disease
• Perkinson's disease
• Vertebral syndrome
• Nerve compression syndrome
• Diabetic retinopathy
• Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
• Multiple sclerosis
• Intercostals neuralgia
• Entrapment neuropathy
• Lumbago

Adults: One tablet (0.5 mg) three times daily.
Children: Not recommended.

Mecobalamin is contraindicated in-patients with known hypersensitivity to Mecobalamin.

If there is no response at all after a certain period of time, it should not be continued for more than one month.

Mecopen is well tolerated. However, a few side effects like GI discomfort e.g. anorexia, nausea or diarrhoea and rash may be seen after administration of mecobalamin.

Metformin is known to be substantially excreted by the kidney and the risk of Metformin accumulation and lactic acidosis increases with the degree of impairment of renal function. Thus, patients with serum creatinine levels above the upper limit of normal for their age should not receive Metformin.

Not recommended during pregnancy and lactation.

Keep away from light, store in a cool (below 30°C) and dry place. Keep out of reach of children.

Mecopen 0.5 mg film coated tablet: Box containing 5 strips of 10 tablets each. Each tablet contains Mecobalamin INN 0.5 mg.
