Neorex is a preparation of cefalexin. Cefalexin is a first generation cephalosporin antibiotic. Cefalexin is a bactericidal antibiotic which is active against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms.

It is indicated for treatment of the following conditions caused by susceptible bacteria.

Respiratory tract infections:
Acute and chronic bronchitis and infected bronchiectasis.

Ear, nose and throat infections:
Otitis media, mastoiditis, sinusitis, follicular tonsillitis and pharyngitis.

Urinary tract infections:
Acute and chronic pyelonephritis, cystitis and prostatitis. Prophylaxis of recurrent urinary tract infections.

Gynaecological and obstetric infections
Skin and soft tissue infection
Bone and joint infections
Gonorrhoea

Dental procedures: Treatment of dental infections
 

Adults: 250 mg every 6 hours or 500 mg every 8-12 hours increased to 1-1.5 gm every 6-8 hours for severe infections. 

Children: The usual daily dosage for children is 25 mg/kg body weight daily in divided doses, doubled for severe infections, max. 100 mg / kg daily.

Under 1 year : 125 mg every 12 hours.
1-5 years : 125 mg every 8 hours.
6-12 years : 250 mg every 8 hours. 
Prophylaxis of recurrent urinary-tract infection, Adult: 125 mg at night.
Doses may need to be reduced in severe renal impairment.

Cefalexin is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to the cephalosporin group of antibiotics.

Laboratory experiments and clinical experience show no evidence of teratogenicity, but it would be wise to proceed with caution during the early months of pregnancy, as with all drugs. Caution should be exercised when cefalexin is administered to a nursing mother.

Cefalexin is usually well-tolerated by patients allergic to penicillin, but cross-reaction has been encountered rarely. As with other broadspectrum antibiotics, prolonged use may result in the overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms (e.g. Candida, Entercocci, Clostridium difficile), which may require interruption of treatment.

A small proportion of patients receiving cefalexin experience gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.
 

Serum levels of cefalexin can be reduced greatly by peritoneal dialysis or haemodialysis.

Store in a cool (below 30°C), dry place and protect from light. Keep out of the reach of children.

Neorex-250 mg capsule: Box containing 10 strips of 10 capsules each. Each capsule contains cefalexin monohydrate BP equivalent to cefalexin 250 mg.
Neorex-500 mg capsule: Box containing 8 strips of 6 capsules each. Each capsule contains cefalexin monohydrate BP equivalent to cefalexin 500 mg.
Neorex suspension: Amber glass bottle containing powder for the preparation of 100 ml suspension. After reconstitution each 5 ml contains cefalexin monohydrate BP equivalent to cefalexin 125 mg.
